So wifey ran into one of the trainers I (John) used to work with at a local globo-gym. …He mentioned he had run into a couple of CrossFitters in their mid-40’s. “CF is a young man’s game… It’s too hard on the joints… I saw a couple of people at [globo-gym] get hurt trying CrossFit…” The sad part is he’s actually a really intelligent guy; he’s simply failed to do the critical thinking. We’ve quoted it before but it bears repeating: “people’s needs differ by degree, not kind. Olympic athletes are looking for functional dominance; [our grandparents are] looking for functional competence. Competence and dominance manifest and optimize through identical physiological mechanisms. We scale our program by altering rest, load, intensity, etc. while utilizing the same exercises for everyone whenever possible.” In other words, you don’t get to do the best exercises because you’re elite in your demographic, you get to be elite in your demographic by doing the best exercises! And if you scale correctly, you will rehab your body, not break it down.
