“That’s ridiculous.” Or so one of our clients was told when she visited another CrossFit box and informed the Trainer that she was still squatting from a box. Hmmm… we can’t help but wonder if the Trainer said that before or after watching this particular athlete do an Air Squat. You see, although this athlete is working hard and her Squat is progressing, it’s still immature. Unassisted by the box, she cannot consistently perform a proper Air Squat with a full range of motion. And frankly, that should be obvious to any CrossFit Trainer with a modicum of coaching skill.
What’s even more troubling is that, like her current workout partner, this athlete came to us after several months at another CrossFit box in St. Louis. And after several months at two different boxes, BOTH of their Squats were severely defective! Before could do anything else, we had to correct all the bad habits they’d been allowed to develop! So call us “ridiculous” all you want. We stand by our belief that this simple box is one of the most useful coaching tools in any gym. And EVERY client that walks in our door will squat off a box until they prove they can correctly squat without it. That may take one set, or it may take several months. But at the end of the day, we will do more than just pay lip service to to concept of virtuosity in our athletes’ movements.
